2022 Pinot Noir, La Cruz Vineyard
We're delighted to bring back the La Cruz (The Cross) vineyard Pinot noir in our portfolio... though in very limited production! The vineyard is located at the Keller Estate Winery on a knoll overlooking the Petaluma Gap in the Sonoma Coast of Northern California.
Our 8th vintage with La Cruz Pinot Noir is quite reminiscent of the 2012, 2014 & 2018 vintages with a beautiful lush texture, richness and length. The wine is so wonderfully full in the mouth and fabulously round in flavor. Dark ruby red, shows a ripe voluptuousness while the flavors keep going effortlessly. Waves of raspberries, cherry preserves, red currants & root beer burst from the glass. While lovely, flavors of date nut bread, white pepper, brown sugar, and sandalwood are wrapped in a gorgeous silky texture. Has a mouth-coating unctuousness while seamless to its impressive lengthy finish. Acidity and soft tannins are just about perfectly balanced. Great for drinking now; yet should be delicious over the next 5+ years. Age 2 – 12 years Pinot
It receives cool morning fog from the nearby San Francisco Bay viewable to the South with a nice marine influence from the Coastal range bordering Bodega Bay directly to the West. The blocks from which we sourced this Pinot noir are planted to varying soils & elevations (up to 700’ and down to 150’) on vertical trellis. The blocks were picked early morning under headlamp & promptly loaded in a refrigerated truck for the long haul back to Oregon. We destemmed 85% with the balance whole cluster fermented, followed by cold soak for 7 & 10 days in separate 1.5 ton fermenters; gently increasing the temperatures to initiate native fermentations. Gentle pump overs & punched downs were performed only 1-2 times per day during fermentation. We crafted with a slightly newer oak composition with a single racking to final blend. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered.
